I am a huge fan of cross training. I believe all horses should learn in and out of the arena, over various terrain, in different settings, and get to enjoy nature as much as possible. Hill work is amazing for horses. Walking up a hill, in hand or under saddle, requires the horse to use their glutes, back muscles and core, not to mention it requires balance, engaging the thoracic sling and causing the horse to step under himself. If you have access to hills, use them. If you don't, trailer out to some hills if you can. Not only is it a great way to strengthen your horse, but it can strengthen you as well, especially if you go on foot, and it is a wonderful way to enjoy nature and get out of the arena.
